An accomplished appellate advocate, Ryan Clinton has successfully handled a wide variety of appellate matters
in both state and federal courts. Ryan has successfully presented more than ten oral arguments in appellate
courts in Texas and Louisiana---including three to the Texas Supreme Court. He has also successfully
briefed matters before the United States Supreme Court.
Ryan is a committed advocate, skilled at communicating complicated factual and legal analysis in language
that is clear and easily understood. This skill has proven invaluable for a variety of his clients,
including a hospital sued in a case involving thousands of potential plaintiffs, and a university sued after
a tragic on-campus accident. Well regarded by lawyers and judges alike, Ryan has also successfully defended one
of the Texas Courts of Appeals in a suit filed by a then-sitting appellate justice.
Ryan is a frequent speaker on appellate matters at continuing legal education seminars and has served in
Austin’s chapter of the American Inns of Court. Active in his community, Ryan has served on multiple
charitable boards of directors and has written guest commentary published in the Austin American-Statesman, the
Durham Herald-Sun, and the Contra Costa Times.
Prior to joining Hankinson Levinger, Ryan practiced law in a major international firm and later as an Assistant
Solicitor General for the State of Texas. Through these experiences, Ryan honed his writing and appellate
skills, developing significant expertise in a variety of substantive areas including jurisdiction and governmental immunity.
Ryan received his JD from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2000, graduating with Order of the Coif
honors. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University in 1997, where he graduated with cum laude honors in both Political Science and Public Policy Studies.
